The Loyalty of Leadership

Leadership, the word, may be one of the most highly used words in the English language and it certainly is in the business community.

Why are we so attached to this word? What does it mean and who is responsible for expressing its elements? The elements of Leadership, to me, are described in our Core Behaviors (Help, Engage, Respect, Excel, and Integrity). These elements are not owned or expected by just a few people. Servant Leadership
has taught us that everyone is a leader.

A word less popular in business is Loyalty. To me Loyalty and Leadership should be combined to create an expectation for all of us; employees, department managers, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, etc. When the two words intersect is where we recognize that Leadership is an expectation and that we are committed and Loyal to expressing ourselves and our work from the position of Leadership.

As a leader, I am loyal to being helpful, to being personally engaged, to be respectful to others, to do my very best to excel at what I do, and to have integrity in my actions and words.

In the intersection of Loyalty and Leadership lies action - the ACT of Leadership. Where are your loyalties and are your actions consistent at the intersection?
